Monchique’s 17th century convent could become luxury hotel

Monchique municipality has announced plans to purchase the town’s rundown Nossa Senhora do Desterro convent – a majestic monument sited on top a hill – and enlist the help of private investors to renovate it and turn it into a luxury hotel.

The 17th century convent, which was rebuilt sometime after being destroyed by the devastating 1755 earthquake, has been abandoned for decades despite remaining one of the town’s most beloved and popular attractions.

Though the council wants to see it restored to its former glory, establishing who owns it has proved extremely difficult.

The convent is divided into several parcels that were once sold to different people at a public auction. The original owners have since died and there are so many heirs that it is almost impossible to know who owns which part of the estate.
