500 million “will be speaking Portuguese by end of century”

500 million people will be speaking Portuguese by the end of the century.

This is the claim of Secretary of State for the Communities José Luís Carneiro who says there are ‘clear indicators’ that the language is growing “in all the regions of the world”.

China, for example already has three universities teaching Portuguese while demand in South Africa has reached 40%.

Portuguese is also “increasingly popular” in South America.

Estimates already point to 380 million people speaking Portuguese by 2060, said Carneiro, adding that the language is “very relevant for culture, as well as the economy”.
